Germaphobe or Germophile – Perhaps We’re All a Little of Both?

Yes – it’s that time of year again. Cold and flu season is officially upon us. Have you ever noticed how many people, especially women, have certain “hot buttons” when it comes to germs? Some people refuse to shake hands, but think nothing of dropping their purse or backpack on the kitchen counter when they walk in the house. Some may apply hand sanitizer “ad nauseam” throughout the course of a day at the office, but never even think to give their beloved cell phone a wipe down every so often.

When it comes to the spread of germs, it seems that many of us may talk the talk, but walking the walk is much more difficult – and germs may be almost impossible to really control. This is especially true in a workplace environment. What’s more, all we can really control is our own microcosm of germs. Think about all the people we come in contact with each day. We have no idea what they’ve done to eliminate and kill germs. And with all the doorknobs, toilet handles, car keys and electronic devices that we touch each day — doesn’t the cycle begin all over again each time we touch a foreign object?

But… before you throw your dirty, germy hands up and say “why bother?” statistics still show that hand washing is king when it comes to killing and preventing germs (see link). This is not to say that we shouldn’t all continue our own individual germ-preventive measures, but maybe doing just one thing really well is the secret.
